Our Vision for PSHE
At St John’s Stonefold CE Primary School, our PSHE curriculum is rooted in our vision of being “Rooted and Established in God’s Love: Nurture, Grow, Fly” (Ephesians 3:17). We are committed to nurturing every child to grow in confidence, resilience and ambition, enabling them to soar as happy, healthy and respectful individuals.
Guided by our Christian values of Empathy, Aspiration, Generosity, Love and Endurance (EAGLE), PSHE forms a fundamental part of school life and underpins our commitment to developing the whole child. Through our curriculum, children learn how to build positive relationships, manage emotions, make responsible choices and contribute positively to society.
We aim to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to thrive both now and in the future, helping them become confident, compassionate and responsible citizens who embrace their uniqueness and live out our values in everyday life.
Intent
Our PSHE curriculum is designed to:
- Promote positive mental health and emotional wellbeing.
- Develop confident, resilient and independent learners.
- Teach children how to build and maintain healthy relationships.
- Encourage respect, kindness and empathy towards others.
- Develop understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion.
- Equip children with the knowledge and skills to stay safe in an increasingly complex world.
- Foster responsible citizenship and prepare pupils for life in modern Britain.
- Encourage children to make informed and healthy choices.
- Support pupils in living out our Christian vision and EAGLE values.
Implementation
At St John’s Stonefold, PSHE is taught through the Coram SCARF programme, which provides a comprehensive, progressive and fully planned curriculum from Reception to Year 6.
Learning is organised into six key themes:
- Me and My Relationships
- Valuing Difference
- Keeping Safe
- Rights and Respect
- Being My Best
- Growing and Changing
PSHE lessons are taught regularly and are enhanced through wider school life, including:
- Collective worship.
- Our behaviour curriculum.
- Online safety education.
- Pupil leadership opportunities.
- Educational visits and visitors.
- Charity work and community engagement.
- Celebration of British Values and protected characteristics.
Children are encouraged to discuss, reflect, question and apply their learning to real-life situations, helping them to develop the confidence and skills needed to navigate life safely and successfully.
Progression Through School
EYFS
Children begin by learning about friendships, feelings, personal safety, healthy lifestyles and understanding themselves as unique individuals. They develop confidence, independence and the skills needed to work and play positively with others.
Key Stage 1
Children develop their understanding of relationships, emotions, personal safety and responsibility. They learn how to recognise and manage feelings, build friendships, respect differences and seek help when needed.
Lower Key Stage 2
Pupils deepen their understanding of wellbeing, diversity, safety, responsibility and citizenship. They develop greater awareness of healthy relationships, online safety, emotional regulation and the impact of their choices on themselves and others.
Children explore increasingly complex themes including managing risk, resilience, wellbeing, financial responsibility, healthy relationships and preparing for transition to secondary school. They develop the skills needed to become informed, responsible and respectful members of society.
