Welcome To

INCLUSION

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Welcome

At St John’s Stonefold CE Primary School, we are committed to providing an inclusive, nurturing and ambitious learning environment where every child is valued, respected and enabled to flourish. Rooted in our Christian vision,“Rooted and Established in God’s Love: Nurture, Grow, Fly” (Ephesians 3:17), we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed, participate fully in school life and achieve their potential.

We recognise that every child is unique. Through high expectations, adaptive teaching, personalised support and strong partnerships with families, we work together to ensure that all pupils are able to thrive academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.

Our Vision for Inclusion

At St John’s Stonefold, inclusion is at the heart of everything we do. Guided by our Christian EAGLE values of Empathy, Aspiration, Generosity, Love and Endurance, we strive to remove barriers to learning and provide a learning environment where every child feels known, valued and supported.

We believe that high-quality teaching is the foundation of successful inclusion and that all children should have access to a broad, balanced and aspirational curriculum regardless of need, ability or starting point.

What is SEND?

A child or young person has Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND) if they have a learning difficulty or disability which requires special educational provision that is additional to or different from that normally available to children of the same age.

Children may experience difficulties in one or more of the following areas:

  • Communication and Interaction
  • Cognition and Learning
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)
  • Sensory and/or Physical Needs

How We Support Pupils with SEND

At St John’s Stonefold, support begins with high-quality adaptive teaching in the classroom. We believe that good teaching for children with SEND is good teaching for all children.

Support may include:

  • Classroom adaptations and personalised learning strategies.
  • Additional small-group interventions.
  • Individual support programmes.
  • Specialist resources and equipment.
  • Assistive technology.
  • Support from external agencies and specialists where appropriate.
  • Individual SEND Support Plans and Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).

The Graduated Approach

We follow the graduated approach outlined in the SEND Code of Practice:

Assess

We identify strengths, areas of need and any barriers to learning.

Plan

We work with parents, pupils and staff to agree outcomes and support strategies.

Do

Support is delivered through classroom provision, interventions or specialist support.

Review

Progress is reviewed regularly and next steps are agreed.

This cycle ensures that provision is carefully tailored to individual needs and remains effective over time.

Universal, Targeted and Specialist Support

Most children will have their needs met through high-quality classroom teaching and adaptations.

Where additional support is required, children may access:

Universal Provision

Support available for all pupils through inclusive classroom practice.

Targeted Provision

Additional interventions delivered in small groups or through focused support.

Specialist Provision

Individualised programmes, specialist advice or support linked to Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) or recommendations from external agencies.

Working Together with Parents and Families

Parents and carers are key partners in their child’s education.

We are committed to:

  • Listening carefully to parents’ views and experiences.
  • Involving families in all decisions regarding SEND provision.
  • Providing regular review meetings.
  • Sharing targets and progress information.
  • Working collaboratively to secure the best outcomes for children.

We believe that the strongest outcomes are achieved when school and home work in partnership.

Working with External Agencies

Where additional expertise is needed, we work with a range of professionals including:

  • Educational Psychology
  • Speech and Language Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Community Paediatrics
  • CAMHS
  • Specialist Teachers
  • Early Help Services
  • Health Services and Social Care Teams

These partnerships help ensure that children receive the most appropriate support possible.

Assistive Technology and Accessibility

We recognise the important role technology can play in removing barriers to learning.

Where appropriate, pupils may access:

  • Speech-to-text software
  • Text-to-speech technology
  • Visual support tools
  • Communication aids
  • Adapted devices and accessibility resources

to promote independence, confidence and successful access to the curriculum.

We are committed to ensuring that our environment remains as accessible as possible for all pupils and visitors.

Transition Support

We understand that transitions can be challenging for some children.

We work closely with:

  • Pre-school settings
  • Other primary schools
  • Secondary schools
  • External agencies
  • Families

to ensure that transitions are carefully planned and supported. Additional visits and bespoke transition arrangements are provided where needed.
